What were you thinking?

Fun fact: Grandma S. hates Ellen.

Coincidentally, I happen to hate this song.

But how can you hate both when there's synchronized dancing involved?

Went to see Inglorious Basterds with Cerezo last night for the second time and since if you know what’s good for you you’ve already seen it (unless you’re Mike) and you don’t need me to tell you what a great example of Tarantino filmmaking it is.

Or maybe you do?

In either case, Hans Landa might be one of my favorite characters ever.

So smooth-talking, so ridiculous.

Loves it!

It has also inspired me to start learning my other heritage-language: German. (Mom’s from Britain and I already speak English so that’s a moot point)

I already speak French and I can see some similarities between all three in certain parts but maybe it’s my extreme exhaustion slash need for a nap but the only thing I can recall that isn’t an introductory sentence is

Ich warte im Flughafen.

I’m waiting in the airport.

Fuck, I wish I was in der bar instead.

I'd watch you with my thumb above the button

Today I went to go check out the Busblog on its actual url instead of being lazy through my Google Reader at work and got scared because one of those “Government Blocking Access” notices popped up and I was worried I couldn’t read the Busblog in its true form from my desk anymore.

In a panic, I refreshed.

And there it was in all its glory.

So I put on some Josh Ritter and all was right in the world.

PS Is anyone else going to watch the Obama Speech on Health Care tonight?

Should be interesting.

Dear America,

I don't understand you.

I feel like maybe we were once friends, or at least on our way to getting to know each other, and every time I start to think I've begun to get to know you a bit you do something that totally shocks me and makes me think I didn't know you at all.

Maybe it's because I'm not from your country that I don't understand why you guys don't want universal health care. It must be, because for me being able to visit a doctor when I'm sick or go to the emergency room when something bad happens and not have to worry about how much it's going to cost me is what I consider to be a fundamental right.

I've always believed that everyone has a fundamental right to have free access to medical treatment, and I don't understand, America, why so many of your people are so scared of letting the government into the health care system.

It's like you see the government as a Big Brother like figure, someone that's just imposed over you, controlling, and forget instead that it's actually made up of hundreds of individual people with thoughts and feelings and, yes, agendas. But still people.

Some of which really seem to care about you, like President Obama. Let me tell you, I was so proud of you when he got elected. So many people that I know shared the same thought: America's making a really smart decision.

Of course nobody's perfect but from an outsiders perspective it looks as though you have a well-educated, thoughtful, and compassionate leader who genuinely seems interested in making your country a better place to live.

What is confusing though is that you have problems with your leader trying to * reach out to your children, to inspire them to work hard and be better people and reach their full potential.

Why is that bad, America?

I wish our Prime Minister did stuff like that.

You're such a proud country and while you've done some stuff I don't agree with personally, I have huge respect for your accomplishments, for some of the people that have risen to the top by because of you, and will even forgive you for trying to invade us that one time.

I really like you, America. Please don't give me reason to stop.

Much love,
A.

*Props to the Busblog for bringing this to my attention.

Got treated to a delish din at Buccacino's by Victoria last night.

It's the last time I'm going to see her till Xmas, she leaves for Ottawa tomorrow.

I keep feeling in-between being sociable and lazy today and it's so rare that I have a whole day to myself that even putting on some makeup and going in this blistering heat seems unfathomable.

I already watched Brazil and really enjoyed it, I'd forgotten about stories like those in 1984 and Farenheit 451 etc but this was a nice reminder of social commentary and satire as well as 80's cult filmmaking.

Oh, and notice the parallel between when John comes out of the torture room and nonchalantly removes his blood-splattered lab coat while chatting with Sam, and the Matthew Good Band video for Carmelina? Cool.

Watch it if you haven't already.

So what's next? I have some movies kicking around and some games I could be playing and eventually dinner and then what?

Oh right, coffee and a walk with Candice.

That's being productive, right?

Happy Labor Day guys!

If I ever go broke from bad investments and lose all my marbles I hope I can do it as well as Emperor Norton.

A businessman in San Fran he lost the money bequested to him by his father and disappeared for a while and came back cooler and I guess crazier than ever.

Who has the balls to name themselves the Emperor of the United States (and Protector of Mexico), after all?

Hanging out on the streets in high regalia with walking canes or umbrellas, Norton I personally inspected cable cars and signs, sidewalks and the uniforms of police officers and was, I bet, everyone's best friend.

Those were the days when crazies were cool, eccentrics were humored and when some asshole cop with a wicked name (Armand Barbier) tried to put 'em in a mental hospital the people were outraged.

How dare you try and put the Emperor away!

Luckily for Armand the Emperor was big enough to grant him an Imperial Pardon
and from then on all the police officers saluted Norton when they passed him on the street.

The subject of characters and plays and popular media the Emperor died suddenly on a corner one day.

Just like that.

He had no money but the people loved him so much that the people of the Pacific Club shelled out for an expensive redwood coffin and over 30,000 people showed up to mourn everyones' favorite monarch.

He wrote to Queen V. asking to marry her, did you hear?
She'll probably never get over the loss.

They finally built that bridge he was always harassing everyone about and while they didn't name it in his honor as was proposed, Emperor Norton Day is January 8th so make sure that if you can't be at the grave-site that says

"Norton I, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico"

take a second to bow yr head and remember that it's people like The Emperor who make life worth living.

Even if he died 130yrs before you were born.

I like movie theatres with no-one in them

I wish I had a waterproof camera so I could share with you guys how amazing yesterday was, but unfortunately you'll have to settle for my meager words:

Yesterdays BTA Tubing Adventure was the best idea ever.

I've never gone tubing before and at Brokenhead River you can rent huge tubes with mesh in the middle for holding beers and sitting as well as cup holders for 10$ a pop and spend an hour and a half floating down a river being stupid with your friends and drinking in the heat and sunshine.

It was so good that we went twice.

Morely and I tied our tubes together because mine was to puffy I couldn't reach over the sides with my little girl arms to properly paddle away from embankments and branches hanging over the water and I was pretty thankful because it turns out just floating and not worrying about that stuff makes it all the more enjoyable.

It was perfect; the weather, the people, the activity.

I don't think I'd been that happy and content in a really long time, I wish I could go back and do it again.

Nothing ever really touches me
