You can see she's a beautiful girl

You know your grandma really loves you when you go to her place for her birthday and she insists on sending you home with a care package consisting of stuff from M&M Meats and the leftover home-made sauce and meatballs with spaghetti she made you for dinner.

Grandma S. is 87 today.

My sassy gram was born in 1922 in the same house she lived in until her 70's when the once prominent German neighborhood got too rough, so we moved her into a cute apartment downtown near where I live.

'Cause she can beat yr ass with words, but she's a lady and ladies don't mingle with hoodlums.

My darling gram lived an idyllic childhood that consisted of wholesome activities like skating at the rink on Redwood and Main in the winter to ballroom music and seeing two movies, a short, and a cartoon with a box of popcorn for a nickel at the Starland Cinema.

When she was in her 20's she moved to Thunder Bay with a girlfriend and worked in a factory making shell casings for bombs during WWII until the war was over and she came back here and met my Grandpa who swept her off her feet with his smooth-talk and good looks and had two babies, one of which is my dad.

She's lived through times of enormous change and even though she still uses words like "Negro" and "Fags" she doesn't mean to offend, no. She's just a product of a bygone age when women never left the house without heels and a skirt or at the very least pressed slacks and when you could leave your doors unlocked at night.

She'll never read this because she can't use a computer, doesn't want to. She's smart as hell but in a well-read, worldly way and if you have a question you can bet your bottom dollar she'll give you the best advice you can find and give you a Revello and a hug afterward.

Grandma S. would give the world to see you smile.

And she means the world to me.

Happy birthday Grandma, I love you so much.

The moment your eyes open and you know

Did I ever tell you that Osborne Village at night is one of my favorite places?

How much I love walking out my front door on to it?

That after having a really frustrating evening that going for a walk under the florescents with Candice and getting lost for two hours and finally finding our way back put me in such a stellar mood, heightened by the fact that I was going to my home that I love in a neighborhood that I love?

Because even though now I won't be asleep until after 2am and will be exhausted tomorrow,

I'll fall asleep with a smile on my face.

You are the reason that I still believe

Yesterday I woke up in the best mood ever, I showered and had eggs and then Alyx came over and we went for a walk, a talk, and eventually she fell asleep on my couch in her bra and skirt and I watched Slumdog Millionaire and remembered why I actively tried not to watch critically acclaimed movies once they had been critically acclaimed.

It’s not that the movie wasn’t good, because it was.
It was gritty and real and sometimes made me go “oh my god” and my jaw dropped a few times because I remembered that the slums and terrible living conditions they portrayed are actually how a huge percentage of the worlds population lives and that scared me a bit to see it.

The concept was really interesting and being brought back to the days when Who Wants to Be a Millionaire was popular was some nice nostalgia, I really am a huge fan of the plot and how we were taken from Jamal being interrogated, watching the video of his appearance on the show and learning his history and subsequently how all of his knowledge came to him was interesting and well-paced.

The characters were really well-developed and it wasn't one of those movies that left you wondering at what motivated and moved each of the characters; in most cases you were extremely aware of who they had been shaped into who they became and what drove them through the length of the film. In particular I liked the sleazy host of the show that catapaults Jamal to fame.

What bugs me is when people say that it’s this huge revolutionary movie because it didn’t really feel that way to me. It portrayed some things I never knew, sure, the dark underbelly of a culture that I’m not familiar with, but I’ve heard people say that it’s the best film ever made and that’s just not the case.

I had a similar experience with No Country for Old Men and remember being really stoked to watch it and being really let-down by it and as a result I wasn’t really stoked to watch Slumdog and I think I actually appreciated the movie more knowing it probably wasn’t going to be as glorious as the reviews had made it out to be.
It was a good way to kill a few hours and I liked it, but didn’t appreciate when the nitty-gritty of the film was subsequently ruined by a huge choreographed upbeat dance number featuring the whole cast to an Indian version of that annoyingly catchy Pussycat Dolls song.

You know which one I mean.

Saving my face

It really seems like BTA are taking over Chateau 100, since last night marked the housewarming of Krash and Jocelyn, as well as the much-anticipated Mustache Party.
First guests, we take our Mustaching very seriously.
Mustaches came on and off periodically, double-sided tape doesn't stick to skin as well as you'd hope. However Shawna cheated by sticking her paper one through her piercing, a choice move to be sure.
Fuck, I'm going to hell.
Thanks for comin' out Komus.
Gordon! It's been forevs.
Enjoy your weekend my dears.
