Years of experience

Long weekend almost over; didn't quite feel long enough, did it?
Spent it all hanging with the people I love; between wine and snack fests to mini dinner parties featuring zucchini casserole, stuffed mushrooms and chicken in an avocado and white wine sauce... mmmm. I may or may not be obsessing about eating because I'm moments away from devouring some ribs that have been baking for hours; food is always better when you can smell it cooking all day, I find.
Such a busy week ahead; tomorrow is my very last day at my 9-5 which is honestly terrifying. I've been at this job for almost three years and leaving it (and the decent paycheck) is daunting and scary. Wednesday is my first day as a full-time university student which scares me even more. Everything in order, I have jobs lined up at the university so money's covered and my loan is all prepped to pay for my classes, but it's still such an epic life change.
I've waited for the past year to get to this point, and I'm so much better-prepared and capable to take on this whole new life than I ever thought I'd be.
Its going to be a wild and crazy, definitely challenging year. I can't wait,
I want to love you, pretty young thing

Labour Day of No Labour,
Welcome to my Outdoor Workapce on this lovely Monday; it's Ty's balcony and the weather is just cool enough, just sunny enough, just perfect for sitting outside and catching ip on some 'netting,
Check it:

Looks cozy, doesn't it?
It really was, I was chillin' with my fav soundtrack of late and trollin' the blogosphere, chowing on slices of lovely pizza prepared by Boyfriend Supreme. Then wasps showed up and chased me off the balcony. Damnit!
Here's a quick vid I managed to score of the view before being banished by flying terrors:
Oh well, there's Michael Jackson and shade inside; Ty's taking a break from working on some sweet AV stuff for an upcoming show to make a delicious rub for the ribs we're having for dinner and I'm sitting at the bar and
Oh and even YouTube decided to take its hand at making me smile by suggesting some of these as usernames:

AlysonShaneify was a good one, to be honest,
Don't Don!

Did you know one of the top ten trending topics on Twitter this week was "#SuperJunior"?My original thought was that Super Junior was the name of a hamburger so I punched it into Google expecting flanks of beef, tomatoes and cheese.
This is what I found:
"Super Junior" is the name of a 13-person Korean boy band led by a guy named Park Jung-su aka "Leeteuk" which literally means "special".Riiiiiight.
Usually I write stuff like this off at this point, but the site music kicked in and out of a combination of sheer horror and curiosity I decided to check out a few videos.
I don't quite know what to make of this... part of me loves how over-the-top cheesy and unnecessary it all is, but the other part wants to throw up.
There are a lot of explosions and fire in that video, though, which I like. Also choreographed dance numbers = win.
But they seem to lose their edge after a while and become less "hardcore" industrial and start looking more like hipsters:
and sounding like this:Way to sell out, Super Junior.
And thus ends my love affair with Korean boy band pop music, because if you have to sacrifice your chains and leather pants for scarves and sweater vests in order to sell records, what do you really have left, after all?

Usually I don't believe in browser-specific videos etc but I've been bombarded with people telling me that interactive video The Wilderness Downtown is really worth the hassle; so over some bacon and eggs I caved and downloaded Google Chrome to check it out. And, okay, it was totally worth it.
Here's the postcard I wrote to my younger self:
Totally true.

Nobody I knew liked 808's and Heartbreak except me but I appreciated that he was doing his own thing and trying something new. This vid is an example of that, it's visually stunning especially after Tyrons explains to you how compression hack fade works. Gorg!
But I digress, it's #Wine O'Clock and dancing and drinking needs to happen.

Freshly showered, gettin' dressed.Today's too beautiful to spend inside, it's one of those perfect September days that make me love fall so much: bright and crisp and just chilly enough.
I'm not wearing socks and my toesies are cold; time to toss on a cute dress and some tights and play in the sunshine.
Yesterday Ty and I scoped the scene at the V&V in Kildonan Place and scored some sweet pics of me droppin' bad beatz, a purse of laces and witnessed a kid with fake eyebrows as sideburns. Awesome!
Tonight we're rollin with

After Tweeting about an important lunchbreak decisionI found this trailer over at Laurenoutloud for Catfish, which a quick Google search told me not to watch because it apparently does nothing for the film.
Well I watched it anyway, and so should you, because trailers (generally) kick ass and this movie looks s'wicked.
Also I love their promo website, check it out.
Seriously.
Do it.
So between The Social Network (exciteexciteexcite)and Catfish there are two movies coming out this fall about FaceBook and I find that interesting; it's such a huge social phenomena and I don't think a lot of people take the time to stop and think about how online social networking has changed how we interact with each other.
Wired had an interesting article on how behavior spreads through online social networks that I read this morning, though it mentioned that it can't be used for Twitter or FaceBook yet due to the ever-changing dynamics and sheer volume of information.
There are posts coming out all the time on how to analyze FaceBook and Twitter just passed over 145 million users, so it doesn't look like we'll get comprehensive info on that anytime soon.
I wonder what it would look like if we could?
I honestly think we'd be creeped out by the answer.

Love the pattern; have the yellow-y light in my office; I can't wait to trade the office flourescents for the flourescents in the classroom and the recording studio at the university.
I listened to an old TED Talk by Mattieu Ricard on the "habits of happiness" today and it got me thinking about what makes me happy; seeing my friends smile, the smell of rain, the smell of fall, school supplies, the way Tyrone look at me, stupid inside jokes, the new Arcade Fire album, my ring tone on my phone, Kate Beaton comics about Nancy Drew, my Mixhard crew, knee-high socks, bubble umbrellas... I honestly could go on!
Coffee date with Ian shortly, delicious salad for lunch plus a run to the university for some last-minute stuff regarding my job there, Grandma's birthday tonight which means a card and flowers for the lady I love the most in this world and an evening with the man I love the most.
This dreary Thursday is going to be great, weather be damned.

It's always when I'm busiest that I feel the most secure, productive, complete, happy. I revel in the exhaustion that simultaneously frustrates me and forces me to push harder; I don't give up easily these days.
Between the River Barge Festival, waking up too early on Saturday, the No Pants Party on Saturday evening and being busy, busy, busy in general I've neglected some hardcore "Alyson Time" that is genuinely needed.Ever just have those nights where you need to sit in your underwear watching 30 Rock eating snacks and sipping on white wine after a nice long bath before an early bedtime. Mmmmm sleepytimez. Yeah, I need one of those baaaaad.
The way school needs teachers
The way Kathy Lee need Regis
That's the way I need
That being said, I'm going to change into my comfiest pajamas and curl up in bed - I want to stay up and visit with Gord but I don't know what he's coming home. I miss my roommate so I bought him some Dr. Pepper and milk from the store, it's in the fridge with a smiley note.Cheesy? Yes, but that's how I keep it real up in n'yah.
Night kiddos.
Superheroes
- by admin
What kind of superhero did you want to be when you were little? For me it was usually a toss-up between Sailor Moon and the Pink Ranger -what? I was a little girl in the 90's!- but eventually resigned myself to the fact that being a superhero probably wasn't a valid career choice and moved on with life. But there are some people who don't let the fact that they weren't born in Eternia or inbued with the Power Cosmic stand between letting them do good in the world; these are the people of the Real Life Superhero Project- a collection of everyday people who don a superhero mark, helmet or cape in hopes of inspiring others.
None of these people can fly or have X-ray vision but they all do amazing things like give out blankets to the homeless, create neighbourhood partols to fight crime, form community outreach programs and teach children about tolerance and civility.
Check out an interview with them here:
This is really creative and imaginative way of reaching out to people, especially children. I know if a guy dressed as a superhero came and talked to me about tolerance and safety I'd be much more interested than if it were a regular police officer. There's always something so enthralling about the idea of a "superhero", and these people seem to have the right idea.
Besides wouldn't the thought of a masked vigilante in your neighbourhood watching over people and keeping them safe help you sleep a little better at night?
