Christopher Walken reads Where The Wild Things Are
- by admin
and he does a way better job than either you or I could do
and that might be because we suck at reading children's books aloud
but it's probably because he's Christopher Walken
and he's better than us.
new Mad Men begins March 25th
- by admin

and I'm really excited about that because Mad Men is among my top-favourite shows to watch and last year didn't feel the same without it (also, where did last year go? wow) and new ads have been put up that are sparking controversy all over the interwebz.
the reason behind the freak-out is that the poster seems to resemble the 9/11 image of the falling man and even though yes the man in the Mad Men poster is falling people seem to be forgetting how the opening credits to the show go and overlooking the obvious homage to Saul Bass' work on posters like Vertigo, which also fit the with time frame of the show.
and let's not trivialize 9/11 for one second, it was a terrible tragedy and we should never forget it
but c'mon guys, this is reaching a bit too far
if we're going to get upset about the poster, why not get upset because of all the other people who jump to their deaths every year? did you know that in Hong Kong over 50% of suicides are by defenestration? why not get upset over that instead
at the risk of sounding callous don't we have bigger things to worry about these days than whether or not a poster that, if you stop for a second and don't go with your immediate "omg! I'm offended" reaction, you'll realize fits in with the theme and context of the show
and besides, nothing happens if you get offended anyway, so just chill out and enjoy the show when it comes back in March

did I tell you smoky tiger rocked our socks the other night?
- by admin

usually they sing songs about Manitoba and weird Canadian history stuff but tonight was extra-special because they covered amazing songs sung amazingly by other people before them
and guys they rocked it
there isn't much room for dancing at The Standard but some people were cutting rugs but not your hero because I'm too self-conscious to dance all slow to slow Nirvana songs and not wound up enough to jump around all mosh-like to the fast Nirvana songs
and do you even dance to The Doors or do you just sit around and smoke joints and drink beers and listen and be amazed? because I've never seen anyone dance to The Doors
but I saw people dancing to Smoky Tiger singing The Doors while wearing a tiger hat with paws on a Saturday night
and that's close enough for me.

a lot of people dump on Winnipeg
- by admin

because, okay, it's not a "cosmopolitan city" and our skyline needs work, I know
but we have a wicked phallus bridge that looks cool
and, okay, we don't get lots of cool, huge concerts all the time because we're kind of in the middle of nowhere
but our isolation means that we raise some wicked-talented people
and okay, the older generation are obsessed with moving into the suburbs and avoiding downtown at all costs
even though our downtown is actually awesome, and The Village is is the second highest-densely populated neighbourhood in the country
and, okay, building a megamall out in Tuxedo by the new IKEA that you have to have a car to access because it's designed so you have to drive from one part of the mall to another is really stupid
but at least we'll finally have access to snazzy Swedish furniture
and, okay, the Jets aren't doing so well, even though the whole city except me is obsessed with them and cheers nonstop and cares SO MUCH about hockey
it's still fun to watch over beers at The Yellow Dog, right?
and, okay, our mayor is a total jerk who does sketchy shit and kicks children in the face
but you know what?
we're tough, here in the 'Peg
because it's minus fucking forty-five today and we go about our business like it's nothing
none of you sissies in Toronto or Vancouver could handle this.
blogging is my passion
- by admin

I've made great friends, connections, and opportunities as a result of my little slice of The Internet.
honestly, I'm not sure what I'd do without it.
but the U.S. Congress is in the process of trying to push forward legislation that would not only affect me and my blog, but the entire Internet as we know it, which is completely unacceptable.
there are lots of great sites that are blacked-out today in protest of the two pieces of legislation, SOPA and PIPA
wired
imgur
the busblog
wikipedia
the oatmeal
and lots more
and for the rest of the day, I'll be joining the protest and not posting anything further on my blog.
it's not much, but it's a start.
so get yourself educated and if you're in the US, write your member of Congress asking them to vote against the bill. if you're a non-US citizen like me, you can petition the state department.
don't let the foolish actions of a few destroy something that is important to so many.
MEME released a new promo vid today
- by admin
and though you guys all know I'm the social media coordinator for one of the best festivals on the Prairies
and though I try not to brag (too much) about how great MEME really is
I needed to share our brand-spakin' new promo vid with you guys, because watching it gets me so excited for this coming summer
we're got some great acts booked, like
John Tejada
Adham Shaikh
Deadbeat
Pablo Bolivar
and possibly the coolest venue in town, the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
and yes, yes, I know it's the middle of January and June seems like a million miles away, but there's nothing like anticipating all the fun you'll be having over the summer to warm your spirit, right?
I'm going a bit crazy right now thinking about how insane things are going to be once we shift into full-on Festivel Prep Mode. Omg.
seriously guys, this year's MEME is going to be ridiculous.
ps: make sure to follow us at @memefestival also ;)
